Taj Mahal

The white-marble mausoleum on the Yamuna — a Mughal love letter and a UNESCO World Heritage Site that still stops people mid-sentence.

History & Background

Commissioned by Shah Jahan in 1631 for Mumtaz Mahal; completed around 1653 by some 20,000 artisans and a thousand elephants.
