Hemis Monastery

The largest and wealthiest gompa in Ladakh, hidden in a gorge, famous for its two-day masked Cham dance festival in early summer.

History & Background

Re-established in 1672 under King Sengge Namgyal; the Hemis festival honours Guru Padmasambhava and runs on the 10th day of the Tibetan lunar month.
